Quando il modellino dei pianeti1 roteò sulla culla,
le loro ombre oscurarono le pareti gialle:
pera che matura. Mia madre s’aggrottò,
come uno specchio teneramente, portò
le dita al capezzolo, vi pose
la parola latte, quindi ritirò la mano.
La sillaba sbandò sul selciato del mio corpo
lustra lusinga prillante nel buio –
mia prima idea di bisogno. Un piano-balocco
suonava ninne-nanne su denti metallici.
Quando mia madre si chinò a baciarmi,
premette il viso sul guanciale del mio silenzio;
quindi si ritirò, scostando i pianeti.
Lieve il sonno dei genitori, quella notte. Il cielo
si stendeva sferzato dal vento e lustro di pece.
Quando parlai, immaginarono se stessi
emergere nelle mie prime parole. Come bimbi
s’illuminarono ai nomi ricevuti.

As the mobile of planets[1] wheeled over my crib,
their shadows darkened the yellow walls:
a ripening pear. My mother frowned
tenderly like a mirror, touched
her fingers to her nipple, placing there
the word milk, then took her hand away.
The syllable drifted to the floor of my body,
a shiny lure swivelling through the dark—
my first imagination of need. A toy piano
played lullabies on its metal teeth.
When my mother leaned down to kiss me,
she pressed her face on the pad of my silence;
then she withdrew, jostling the planets.
That night my parents slept lightly. The sky
lay wind-stripped and polished to its tar.
When I spoke, they imagined themselves
emerging in my first words. Like children
they lit up at the names they were given.
