Ringrazia il cielo per le vittime che imboccano la strada

della follia. Percorrono al tuo posto le strade grame

entro un mondo generoso di violenza. Le sorti loro non avrebbero

dove risplendere, non fosse per quel viaggio, e i probabili

titoli di giornale, e il sospiro profondo del tuo singolare sollievo:

non è toccato a te. Sei fortunato. L’uomo con cui vivi

non t’ammazzerebbe mai, non nel modo violento

che tocca ad altri, con guizzi d’orrore teatrali e costumi

sporchi al punto da poter albergare solo altrove in città,

non qui nelle tue stanze tranquille dove l’unica sorpresa

è un bacio che t’arriva alle spalle. Se mai volesse sbarazzarsi di te,

l’amore tuo lo farebbe con grazia: magari un veleno che s’innamori

del tuo sonno. Compassionevole com’è, non ti lascerà morire

in pubblico, o da solo. Non ti lascerà soffrire

senza essere lì. Non preoccuparti. Si prenderà cura di te a casa.

Thank heavens for victims who find their way

to folly. They walk on the lean streets in your place

and into a world rich with abuses. Their fates would have

no place to shine if not for that journey, the possible

headlines, and sigh pushed out by the odd relief that

it wasn't you. You are lucky. The man you live with

would never kill you, not in the violent way

other people die, all horror-flick theatrics with costumes

so dirty they could only thrive in other parts of town,

not here in the quiet rooms where your only surprise

is a kiss from behind. If he ever wanted to be rid of you,

your lover would do it kindly: perhaps a poison that falls in love

with your sleep. A compassionate man, he won't let you die

in public, or alone. He won't let you suffer

without him. Never worry. He'll take care of you at home.

Rigoberto González è uno scrittore, poeta e critico letterario statunitense di origine messicana. Oltre a due raccolte di poesie (So Often the Pitcher Goes to Water Until It Breaks, 1999, University of Illinois Press; Other Fugitives and Other Strangers, 2006, Tupelo Press), ha pubblicato un romanzo (Crossing Vines, 2003, University Oklahoma Press), un racconto autobiografico (Butterfly Boy: Memories of a Chicano Mariposa, 2006, The University of Wisconsin Press), una raccolta di racconti brevi (Men Without Bliss, 2008, University of Oklahoma Press) e due libri bilingui illustrati per bambini (Soledad Sigh-sighs/Soledad suspiros, 2003, Children’s Book Press; Antonio’s Card/La tarjeta de Antonio, 2005, Children’s Book Press). Ha insegnato in varie università statunitensi e attualmente è Associate Professor of English presso la Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey. È editor e contributing editor della rivista letteraria semestrale Luna della University of Minnesota, tiene una rubrica bimestrale di critica letteraria su El Paso Times, ed è membro del direttivo del National Book Critics Circle.
