"During
the 20th century the novel has been transformed into many
different expressive forms: it has become cinema, song lyrics, it has
widened it as an outlook towards theatrical experience and it has found
its essence, its superb minimum, in the short story, without abandoning
its poetical roots which are the primary source of style." JMM
