Julio Monteiro Martins A Brazilian author, who in his country has published nine books in all, between novels and collections of short stories. He has been professor of creative writing at Goddard College (Vermont) from 1979 to 1980, at the Oficina Literária Afrânio Coutinho (Rio de Janeiro) from 1982 to 1989, at the Istituto Camões di Lisbona in 1994 and at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) of Rio de Janeiro in 1995. He received the title of "Fellow in Writing" from Iowa University (International Writing Program) in 1979. He is amongst the founders of the Brazilian Green Party and the ecologist movement "Os Verdes"; he has been defender of human rights in Rio de Janeiro, person in charge of the safety of the "meninos de rua" called to testify on the slaughter of abandoned children. At the present time he teaches Portuguese and Translation at the Università Degli Studi di Pisa.
